Hypnotherapy is a way of relaxing the conscious mind so that the subconscious can be more easily accessed. Following are some common questions and misperceptions many people have about hypnotherapy.
Can anyone be hypnotized?
Anyone of average intelligence who is able to pay attention and follow directions can be hypnotized, although some people will go into a deeper level of hypnosis than others.
How does hypnosis work?
Once you are relaxed and in a hypnotic state, the doorway to the subconscious mind is opened. With your permission and consent, the hypnotherapist can then guide your subconscious mind to access your own inner wisdom in order to bring about positive changes in your life.
What is the subconscious mind?
The subconscious part of the mind or the “inner mind” is like our “control panel.” It controls most of what we do in our lives. We do what our subconscious mind tells us to do. It controls how we function on a day to day basis including our automatic thoughts and behaviors.
Can hypnosis “cure” me?
Hypnosis itself can’t “cure” you. Hypnosis is simply a tool to help facilitate healing and change. Only you can control whether you change.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis feels like you are in a relaxed, comfortable, and peaceful state but fully awake and conscious. Similar to what it feels like right before you fall asleep or when you’re just waking up from sleep.
Will I be asleep?
No, you will be completely aware during hypnosis. If you fall asleep, then you are no longer in hypnosis. If you do fall asleep, it is generally a very light sleep. If that should happen, then the hypnotherapist will give you a simple suggestion to wake up.
I am the type of person who can’t relax. Am I still a good candidate for hypnosis?
Yes, there are specific techniques that can be used for people who have difficulty relaxing. Moreover one does not have to be in a deeply hypnotic state in order for hypnosis to be effective.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, that is never possible. Hypnosis is a cooperative process and you are in control of your mind and body at all times.
Can I be hypnotized against my will?
No, hypnosis requires your consent and you will need to agree to participate in the process.
Can you make me do things that I don’t want to do like quack like a duck or bark like a dog?
No, you are in complete control of all of your thoughts and behaviors during hypnosis.
Will I tell secrets while in hypnosis?
No, hypnosis is not “truth serum.” You are in complete control of everything you say and do during hypnosis.
How many sessions will I need?
The result varies. Some people see positive changes after one session. Other people need reinforcement sessions. If the issue you are working on has been a long-standing issue (longer than six months) then it is likely that you will require several sessions.
How do I prepare for hypnosis?
All you need to do is make sure you are comfortable. Wear comfortable clothes, make sure you are not hungry etc. Do not consume lots of caffeine or sugar beforehand. Make sure that you do not skip medications that you take regularly on a daily basis. There is nothing else you have to do. Just enjoy the experience!
Does medical insurance cover hypnosis?
At this time medical insurance does not cover hypnosis. This may change in the future. Some people are able to use their flex spending accounts or Health Savings Accounts to pay for their sessions. You might be able to claim your sessions as a tax deduction depending on the issue you are working on.
How do I set up an appointment?
You can contact me through this website, or you can call or send an e-mail to let me know you are interested in hypnotherapy. Once we have talked and set up your appointment, you will complete the Hypnosis Intake Packet, fill it out and bring it to your first appointment.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, except in the case of sickness or other emergencies, you may be charged for the full rate of the session.
